Background
Founded in 2006, DeVineWare offers a suite of solutions and applications designed specifically for the wine industry. Based out of The Wine Country of Sepastopol, California, and combining over 60 years of wine industry expertise, The DeVineWare Team develops customized databases and applications to the specific needs of individual wineries.
There are four applications that make up their suite; the first is a cloud-based responsive web application that can be accessed on mobile phones, this has an accompanying mobile-only app that support winery sales teams by providing on-the-go reporting for leads, allows them to update client information and plan follow-ups. They also have TheWineryApp and Wine Locator, that help end consumers easily locate wines from retailers and restaurants nationwide and stay informed about upcoming wine events.
Since initially working together in 2015, Aware has collaborated with DeVineWare on several projects, facilitating their business technology needs. Largely this centered around the building of their main web application for sales teams and several other mobile apps. However, we have also collaborated on the design of their websites, the migration of legacy business applications among other requirements.
Business Demands
DeVineWare required a tool that would help wineries drive revenue and enable their sales teams by giving them all the detailed reporting and customer information they needed while on the road. The idea was to develop a mobile-friendly solution that supported all inherited data as well as future inputs. This had to be achieved while losing none of the functionality they currently had from their legacy application.
The application contained highly detailed sales data for a specific winery; broken down per month, per brand, per account, and so on. The legacy application was run on FoxPro, where each winery had its own separate database, which resulted in individual application instances to serve each client. This resulted in unoptimized performance and importantly was a purely desktop-based application that the salespeople could not access from mobile devices while out of office.
A solution was proposed that would consolidate the data, combining everything into one database that would simultaneously keep all the private data from the individual wineries separated but could still be accessed by a mobile-friendly web application for salespeople on the move.
Solutions
Aware developed an architecture on the cloud that allowed us to upload the legacy data of all the wineries using a simple process that allows the DeVineWare team to update the application’s information daily. This cloud architecture was moved to Amazon Web Services in 2019, where it has remained since and hosts all aspects of the application.
From a business perspective the front-end responsive web application is convenient, and accessible for sales teams on the go. They have easy access to detailed reporting and visual dashboards that allow them to drive revenue. The cloud backend allows DeVineWare to manage all its administrational necessities, activating users, managing log, passwords and other types of security protocols.
By utilizing AWS DeVineWare were able to make a more efficient application that provides more capability, less wasted resource, and a better and more valuable end-user experience. Managing their infrastructure with Amazon Web Services, has made it more secure, cost effective, scalable and flexible.
